A subtle shuffling preceded the wary Shadows that crept forward, glanced behind them with their lamp-like eyes, and scattered; not-quite-footsteps turned into a stumble--groan--shift of a cloak--
"Owfngh--!"
--and Axel's narrow shoulder crumpled against one of Never Was's ever-brilliant, ever-empty buildings, chest almost heaving and a drop of too-cold sweat tracing the dip of his temple. It hurt to breathe--hell, it hurt to be, not that he really was--and he followed up a pained grunt with a rustling hiss, pressing harder against the building to straighten up and turning to rest his back against it instead.
Man. Oh. Man.
He'd died.
He was sure he died. The last flame flickered away into oblivion and the bitter cold claimed him and there was nothing, not too-blue eyes and not the clock tower and not the fading light that he knew was Roxas. Oblivion. S'not all it's cracked up to be.
But if he'd definitely died, then...how was he here? This sure seemed like reality, and after utter nothingness it was like heaven--besides, if it were a dream he didn't think it'd feel like this. Axel had had brushes with death before, pushed himself past the point of no return, and it had never hurt him this much. He had to be alive, then, because only real life would make life after death suck.
Maybe--!
He put a hand to his chest and waited, barely breathing. C'monc'monc'monc'monc'mon...
Dammit.
Well, that was a little too much to hope for. But hey, he hadn't really expected to be alive to begin with, so that was something. Meantime, he had to track down Sora or someone with a Potion or he wasn't going to stay alive for very long. Doesn't that just figure. All work and no play, seriously. Not that he could honestly say he cared at this point--he was crazy enough to blow himself up only because there was nothing left to do. With Roxas happily married to Sora now and the Organization on the verge of collapse and his own heart unlikely to be found anytime soon, Axel had little reason to exist or not exist, but he wasn't the type to look a gift horse in the mouth. As long as he was alive and his death served no purpose, he'd make the most of it.
