Solitude was refreshing, a precious commodity when one held the responsibility of a king. The ruler of Disney Castle had retreated to the balcony of his and his wife's bedchamber to sit and sift through his thoughts. The breadth of the castle courtyard sprawled below, and Mickey ran his gaze over the well-manicured shrubbery. A few birds had taken up residence in one of the shrubs, much to the chagrin of the castle gardener who couldn't abide the gaping holes that now peppered his hard work.
His queen was elsewhere, most likely in the castle library, and Donald and Goofy had been at the training grounds for a good while now. Mickey smiled and laughed to himself. Donald's temper couldn't have remained unprovoked this long. At any moment, the king expected to hear Goofy stumbling into the courtyard with an angry Donald chasing him. That was exactly why Mickey fought to preserve life; it was too colorful a thing to be destroyed so carelessly.
The sun had already passed its zenith and was beginning the slow descent to the nightly death that eventually became another resurrection in the morning. That was the one aspect of light that Mickey loved the most—no matter how dark the night is, light will always be born anew. He had seen that with his own eyes over and over again. He had seen it in Riku.
I sure hope you're alright, wherever you are, kiddo.
The shadows stretched beneath the landscaping of the courtyard, beneath everything the light touched, in fact. Despite illumination, darkness always lurked beneath the surface. You could not have one without the other. The king remembered a time when he had zealously believed the only way to survive was to eradicate the darkness completely. Darkness could produce nothing but evil and death, and light could only produce goodness and life. The time he had spent with Riku in the Realm of Darkness and in Castle Oblivion had changed such black-and-white convictions. Riku walked in darkness, yet he was not evil and did not seek the destruction of life. Could it also be possible for someone to walk in light and yet seek destruction?
A paradox, huh? Contradictions...too many contradictions. It'd be a lot easier to act if things weren't so grey. I wonder if I should go see Yen Sid.
He was pulled from the vortex of his increasingly complicated thoughts by the sound of footsteps behind him. His large, round ears twitched at the sound of swishing fabric against the stone floor. With a large smile on his face, the king turned around to find his queen looking at him. Her gloved hands were folded in front of her against the ample skirt of her dress, and her face, while happy at the sight of her husband, contained concern just behind her eyes.
“Are you feeling okay, dear?” she asked while moving to stand beside him.
Her presence never failed to make his heart leap for joy. There were many things and people in his life that were precious to him, but Minnie was above them all, when it came down to it. He would do anything to keep her safe. He also couldn't ever lie to her. “I've just been thinkin'... There's something wrong, I know it. I can't shake this feeling that something terrible is gonna happen soon. I need some answers.”
Minnie blinked her lovely eyes and reached out a hand to his shoulder. “Goodness, you think so? But I thought everything would be right as rain once all the worlds had their light restored. What could be happening?”
At that moment, Goofy did indeed stumble into the courtyard, straight into the shrub that housed the birds, which resulted in an explosion of panicked wings and feathers. The trusty Captain of the Royal Knights scrambled back to his feet, spitting feathers from his mouth before running toward the first pair of doors he laid eyes on. Donald was hot on his tail, yelling in that unique quack of his voice at the top of his lungs. Unfortunately for Goofy, the doors he had been hoping would lead to sanctuary refused to budge, and he smacked into them. In a half-daze now, he ran in circles around the courtyard and shouted apologies over his shoulder while Donald chased him.
Mickey nearly rolled backwards into the bedchamber, holding his sides and laughing hysterically. He ended up on his back and stretched out his short arms and legs in a spread-eagle position. The face of Minnie appeared overhead, blocking out most of his view of the sky. Mickey grinned, then exhaled a long sigh and regained his earlier pensive mood. “Tell me how those two are still so close when something like that happens almost every day.”
Minnie closed her eyes and smiled. “Oh, that's simple. Even though Donald and Goofy are very different, their opposites complement each other. They need each other, don't they?”
The king sat up and rubbed noses with his beloved. “Exactly, dear. That's it.” He jumped to his feet and went inside, immediately donning the hooded black cloak he still kept in a closet. Because of his small stature and characteristic ears, the cloak provided little in the way of a disguise, and he did not need the cloak to travel through the Realm of Darkness, but having an extra layer of clothing was never a bad thing when traveling the worlds, as he was apt to do.
While he was absorbed in preparations, he heard Minnie bustle into the room. “You're leaving again?” she said with a note of sadness.
“I shouldn't be gone too long.” He was hurriedly scribbling a note. “Could ya give this to Donald and Goofy, please?” Having finished writing, he folded his letter and handed it to Minnie. “I hope they'll figure out what it means.”
Minnie looked at him, then reached for his hand and squeezed it. “I'll really miss you. You'll come back to me, right?”
Mickey leaned in, touched his nose to hers, and then kissed her. “Nothin' could keep me away from you, dear.”
With a final squeeze of their hands, Mickey and his queen parted. He left the room and headed straight for the Gummi Hanger, managing to avoid being seen by Donald and Goofy. Chip and Dale were busy preparing the king's personal Gummi Ship for his departure. Once on board and in the Sea of Stars, Mickey leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
Opposites complement each other. Both the light and the dark are needed. But how can the balance be restored without using destruction? There's just gotta be a way.
