Squall was laying on his back, resting on his bed in Merlin's house. His eyes were focused upward, unblinking at a specific knot of wood on the ceiling. He was completely lost in thought--remembering that day. The day when Maleficent took over; the day when he couldn't protect anyone; the day where he gave up being Squall and became Leon. However, he felt differently remembering it: he was proud. Proud that despite everything that had happened, he and his friends reclaimed the world from the darkness, rebuilt it, and were getting closer everyday to returning it to its original, lustrous splendor.
His eyelids began to droop as his consciousness drifted away towards the realm of dreams. However, he was not meant to enter such a place just yet--that would have to wait for another time.
"Hey, Leon! Git offa yer butt and head out! Yer shift started five minutes ago!"
His eyes snapped wide open, and as he rolled over onto his side he heard Cid sitting down and start clacking away at the keyboard for a few minutes before shouting jovially at him, "C'mon, c'mon. I know yer enjoyin' yerself, but don't let that git to yer head. Still got lots o' work to do, right?" Swinging his legs over the bed and standing up, Squall grabbed his gunblade that was leaning against the wall. A rare smile crossed his lips. "Alright, alright, I'm on it," he called out as he left Merlin's house.
Walking through the groups of people in town, seeing them smiling and laughing, Squall couldn't help but feel like it was infectious. His heart felt ten-times stronger knowing that he was helping to restore all of theirs home. Although he only smiled on occasion, laughing even more conservatively, he had been feeling happier more often lately. A few people he passed thanked the RGRC for all of the work they'd been doing. Each time they did this, Squall felt his conviction to restore this world increase. Still, as he continued walking towards the Bailey, he couldn't help but worry that he might be losing his focus on the mission at hand. With how far along they'd come with the restoration, Heartless were less common, and a lot of places were nearing completion. He couldn't help but worry if he wouldn't be able to protect all of the people again; if he was lowering his guard because of how smoothly things had been going...
"That your best?" His gunblade struck the Bailey floor hard, and the Soldier Heartless it just cut through burst into a plume of black and purple smoke. Swinging it left and right, he laid his gunblade to rest on his shoulder. Looking around him, he saw two more Soldier Heartless moving cautiously towards him. Without a moments hesitation, he shot off a Fira spell, striking one of them cleanly in the face, and he ran towards the other, swinging his blade upward, and carrying himself with it. Both Heartless were eradicated as he landed quietly and cleanly on the ground--his guard hadn't lowered in the slightest.
As he looked behind to make sure they were gone, his eyes instinctively focused through a window on the Castle in the distance. That single dark stain on this world. Try as they might, it was the only place they had trouble taking care of. Getting rid of that would be the RGRC's ultimate triumph over the darkness of this world.
Turning to walk away, a single thought entered into his mind. "As long as that castle stands, I will be Leon. Until it's gone from this world, I can never be Squall."
