The Underworld.
Those words alone were enough to send chills down anyone’s spine. The thought of the place could make one cringe. A desolate world haunted by the spirits of the deceased, no one visited it by choice. The only reason they visited the world was to see the Lord of the Dead, Hades; there was a bargain involved then, an exchange of sorts, or it was to stay permanently. There was not a single good reason to visit the Underworld; none.
Nonetheless, a figure cloaked in black walked through what seemed to be a dark portal and appeared at the entrance to the Cave of the Dead. The hood of the cloak was drawn, the face invisible except for perhaps a lock of bluish-grey hair. The figure did not waste a minute in moving, not lingering in the entrance of the Cave of the Dead and trying to absorb the minute details of the world. He knew what to expect; he had been here before.
It took no time at all for him to reach the chasm known as the Valley of the Dead, floating spirits lingering this way and that over a narrow path. If one was to fall, it was not known what would occur. This was where the spirits of the dead were kept. That thought alone was enough to give any person shivers and send them running in the opposite direction.
It was a good thing he was not a person then, wasn’t it?
He meandered slowly through the Valley of the Dead, absorbing minor details and watching the spirits float about. No Heartless had bothered to appear, which was unusual. They had not bothered to show during his travel at all. That could only mean one thing: the one in charge of them knew he was coming. Hades was no fool; he knew that the Heartless were a waste of time when dealing with one such as this. After all, Nobodies prided themselves in being stronger than the mindless creatures for a reason. Hades also knew that Nobodies did not frequent this world, never mind this specific area. This Nobody meant business and that was what the Lord of the Dead was good at.
The Nobody reached Hade’s Chamber moments later, the doors almost opening themselves. Only one was currently in the chamber, as per usual. Hades loomed over the other as he wandered closer, a small grin on his face. Things were about to get interesting.
”Well what do we have here?” he asked rhetorically, circling the Nobody. ”And here I thought you guys were gone for good.”
”Obviously, we are not,” the other replied coolly, their voice a tenor and smooth. ”I suppose you are wondering why I am here.”
”Funny you should mention that. So, what can I do for ya today? Just remember, my services don’t come cheap you know.” Hades winked after he said that, though received no reply from the Nobody.
”I came here to speak with someone.”
”And let me guess, they’re dead. Sorry, but I don’t fix family problems. They’re dead and gone; I keep ‘em once they’re dead.”
”That is not what I’m asking for.” The Nobody brought his hands to his hood and brought it down, revealing bluish-gray hair covering one side of his pale face. The other half had a cold, blue eye staring straight at Hades. ”You can have them back after I finish a few words with them. That is all I ask for.”
”Oh I see.” These three words were exaggerated and long, Hades now resorting to pacing around the Nobody. ”You think that you and your organization can come in and demand whatever you want. I don’t think so shorty. That’s not how it works down here.”
”And here I thought you made deals.” The grin that was on Hades’ face disappeared at these words, a stern one appearing in its place. ”Tell me, how is that plan to dispose of Hercules going?” The Nobody had changed the subject completely; an odd thing to do in the middle of a conversation. This did not sit well with Hades, who fumed at this question.
”Kid’s still alive,” he grumbled, ”If it wasn’t for that brat with the keyblade, I would have gotten him by now. He’s ruined every one of my plans, all of them!” He started turning from blue to red, a common side of his anger. The other simply watched and waited, a small smirk creeping onto his face. This was the type of response he was looking for.
”It seems we share a common enemy,” the Nobody said, his voice remaining smooth and clear, ”Perhaps then we could aid each other.”
”What? You gotta be kidding me. I don’t need your help and I am definitely not helping you.”
”So you will get rid of him on your own then? I would think that one as powerful as yourself would have been able to already.” This caused the Lord of the Dead to seethe once more, turning a deeper shade of red.
”And you think you can defeat him? That sure worked out.”
”That is why working together could be beneficial for the both of us.” Of course, the Organization would not work with one such as Hades, no matter how powerful he was. The Organization functioned perfectly on its own. However, Hades did not need to know that. ”What would you say to that offer?”
Hades seemed to be calming once more, turning back to his normal blue. ”So let me get this straight. You wanna join forces and get rid of the brat with the keyblade.”
”Yes. It would certainly aid your efforts to disposing of Hercules. Sora would not be able to meddle anymore.”
”And I could certainly do without that.” Hades seemed to be happy with this idea, though he then paused and studied the Organization member carefully. ”So what’s in it for you?”
”I thought I made it clear I wished to speak with someone,” the Nobody told him, his voice with a bit more firmness in it, ”That is all.”
”And that’s it,” Hades deadpanned. This sounded a bit suspicious now.
”The Organization has no further needs to be fulfilled,” he stated matter-of-factly.
Hades thought about this for a minute. The Organization was a mysterious group and they often didn’t bother meddling with the affairs of other worlds, much less their citizens. There was no question that they were powerful; Hades knew that. They also couldn’t be too pleased that Sora wiped most of them out during their prime. That made sense then.
”One summoning of the dead, hold the stench, coming right up,” he said quickly, putting on a smirk and moving around his chamber. ”So who is the lucky person I get to bring back for ya? I get to keep them though. This isn’t a long term sort of thing.”
The Nobody was silent for a moment, his face determined. Once he spoke, his words were slow and grave.
”Ansem the Wise.”
--
”Ienzo, why did you summon me back?”
The man standing in front of him, no longer in the kingly attire the Nobody remembered him in but rather something more simple, was clearly not pleased. He wore a look of anger as he gazed at the one standing in front of him.
”You know as well as I that Ienzo no longer exists,” the other said nonchalantly. The two were standing a distance apart, Hades no longer present in the conversation. ”It has been too long Ansem. Or is it DiZ now?” The last question was said playfully with a grin on the other’s face.
”I do not want part in your games. I know this is not what you summoned me for.”
”True.” The Nobody crossed his arms and stared at the other. Both of them were now making eye contact. ”Times are changing Ansem. Things are not as they used to be.”
”What do you mean?”
The Nobody took a breath, pausing before beginning this explanation. ”Light and darkness used to be rather balanced before this all began. The Heartless came and the darkness grew stronger. Light started to grow weaker.” He paused again, making sure Ansem was listening before continuing. ”The keyblade sought to fix that and bring the light back to power.”
”Which is better for the state of the worlds.”
”And that is where you are wrong.” The Nobody said this nonchalantly as well; he had set that dialogue up to happen almost exactly like it did. ”The keyblade created more problems than solutions. The light is now too strong.”
”It is better for the light to be strong and keep darkness at bay. It has caused enough damage to worlds as it is.”
”Without a proper balance, things will be thrown into chaos. It has already started happening.” The Nobody gestured his hand outward, referring obviously to other worlds. ”Worlds cannot suffice on light alone.”
”Nor can they survive in darkness. Zexion, you are meddling in affairs you shouldn’t be.”
”I wonder who I learned it from.”
Ansem sighed. The Nobody standing in front of him was not the little boy that he had taken in as his foster son; they were not the same. Ienzo had never been this way; he was the most innocent out of all the apprentices. However, his former apprentice was now most likely the least innocent. His hands were most likely dirty from meddling in things he should not. The man was not about to try and stop him though-- he was long gone from the realm of the living. Things were out of his control.
Just as they always were. Zexion disappeared from Ansem’s sight as he vanished back into the world of the dead, never to rise again. The Nobody left the Underworld, his unwritten task completed. The Organization had not been one to meddle in world affairs before, knowing the dangers of it. However, as the balance tipped too far in favor, they found they had to do something. Light was no longer the good that they had once idealized it to. Those ideals had been dropped very long ago.
After all, the Nobodies were rejected from both darkness and light; it could favor neither.
