The leaning paopu tree was vacant, just like the rest of the offset island. He should have known this would be the case. The only boat on the dock was his. But, that didn’t stop him from checking anyway, and now that he had, the emptiness of the place was much more pointed.
“Not here, either...” Sora murmured.
He stood at the end of the wooden planks that connected the smaller islet to the shore of the island. The sun was starting to set, making the ocean before him shimmer.
He let out an irritated sigh. “He’d better not have run off again!”
It was one thing for a guy to want some solitude for a while, but over a day and a half of absence without a trace was cause for concern. Why couldn’t Riku just tell him that he was leaving, if that was what happened? Wouldn’t he have learned by now that he has friends he can trust, especially if something was bugging him?
That guy could be a real pain sometimes. That was the thought that accompanied Sora as he turned around and walked back to the Seaside Shack. Kairi and the others were looking around back on the main island. Maybe they’d found him. Sora could see it now; Riku would probably make some smart-aleck comment about how they needlessly worried about him. Well, it wasn’t that Sora didn’t think Riku could handle himself alone, but come on, was telling the others where he was going really that hard?
Suddenly, something above the shack’s door caught Sora’s eye. He paused. It was a white envelope, stark against the weathered wood. Sora immediately reached up and pulled it down, the tape that held the letter in place snapping as he did so. He unsealed it easily and removed the note inside.
Dear Sora,
This note is just to let you know, in case you didn't pick up on it yet--you never know with you--that I left already, and without you. I'm going off to journey the worlds, like they are supposed to be this time. No raft involved.
I figure, if the keyblade is going to choose a couple of idiots, at least we can honor its wishes by fighting the darkness, right? And you could even bring those two dimwits you kept company with, if they'd come.
I'm sure Kairi'll forgive you if you head out. After all, who'd let an opportunity like this get passed up?
In case that doesn't get you, I dare you.
-Riku
Sora lowered his hand that held the note and looked over at the skyline. He was grinning now.
“A dare, huh?” he said, as though Riku were actually around to hear him, “Well, if that’s how you wanna be!”
It had been a while since he’d seen some real action. After a year of enjoying the serenity of home, he was ready to get out again. He was glad things were peaceful and all, but sometimes, fighting his friends on the beach just got old. And Riku made a good point. If there was still darkness to be fought, shouldn’t he be the one fighting it?
He thought suddenly of Kairi. If she knew he was leaving the world to fight again, she’d want to go with him. The thought was sobering. As much as he loved being with Kairi, a lot, he’d already lost her twice. He didn’t want that to happen again.
Maybe he’d leave a note, just like Riku did. She’d be mad at him, but at least she’d be safe.
Now, how to contact Donald and Goofy...
