It was always the same, like the inevitable rising and setting of the sun. Those two had left her behind again.
On a sunset-kissed shore, Kairi stood staring across the sea, beyond the horizon. In her hands, she gently cradled a paopu fruit, freshly picked from its parent tree. While spending time earlier with Selphie, Tidus, and Wakka, she had noticed the plump, yellow star nestled in the branches of a palm. Selphie had graciously agreed to climb up to get it for her, after making a huge show of getting Tidus and Wakka to turn around and close their eyes.
Now, she was alone. Just her and the paopu fruit she refused to eat. She had plenty of appetite, but...
So, we can be together again!
Right. Anytime Sora and Kairi are together.
We'll be together every day. Right, Sora?
Her face fell at the memory. He was gone again, and she could feel an ache inside her, intensified by the intangible presence of her Nobody. A combination of sadness and mild anger washed over her as she remembered the hastily written note she had found. The safety of the worlds was of much greater concern to Sora than she was. Well, that was an unfair thought, so she revised it. Her safety was of much greater concern to him than taking her with him was. The worlds needed protecting but not with her in tow. She wondered if he missed her as much as she missed him.
“Sora, you might not be here right now, but I'm still sharing this with you, wherever you are.” Raising the paopu to her lips, she bit into it, soft flesh yielding juice that threatened to dribble down her chin. The sweetness of the fruit overrode the mess it was causing. She almost thought she could feel Sora standing beside her, content to enjoy her company.
A cry of pain that wasn't hers lanced through her head. It wasn't female at all. It was—
“Sora!”
Roxas!
Naminé's voice mingled with her own, equally laden with confusion. Kairi knew Sora wasn't here, so where had that sound come from? Her eyes trailed down to the half-eaten fruit in her hand. The gaping hole stared back at her. Then, she shut her eyes and shook her head. Superstitious...
Another cry that sounded far too much like Sora sounded inside her head. She dropped the paopu into the sand and sat down hard, knees pulled close to her chest. Strange images were flashing in her mind's eye, but they were mostly obscured by blankets of darkness and the faint ghosts of chains. She thought she saw the outline of Sora curled up somewhere, but she couldn't tell where he was or if it really was him.
They're in trouble. Naminé calmly infiltrated Kairi's thoughts.
“What's going on? What am I seeing?” Kairi put a hand to her head, tangling her fingers into her hair. The images were still flickering just beyond the chains and the darkness, like a rapid slide-show presentation, but the only sound that came through to her was Sora's anguish that eventually dwindled away into silence. Unable to take it any longer, Kairi stood to her feet, one hand clenched into a fist at her chest. “We have to help them!”
It's too late. Someone has disturbed Sora's memories. But they should repair themselves, given time.
The frustration at being left behind was fueling her desire to find Sora. And then give him a piece of her mind. After she made sure he was all right, of course. “I still need to see him. Can't let Sora and Riku be the only ones doing the saving, right?”
Her head had finally cleared. Whatever had been happening to Sora was at least no longer connected to her. Having made her decision, she turned and headed for home, determined to find a way off Destiny Islands and to wherever Sora was. It didn't matter that she had no idea where to begin her search.
As the sun dipped farther below the horizon, the waves lapped lazily at the shore, wrapping the paopu fruit in its embrace and carrying it out to sea.
