Devastation unlike any she had ever known paralyzed her.
When Mickey had not shown for dinner, Queen Minnie had enlisted everyone's help in searching for him. This was not an unusual occurrence. Mickey often disappeared again shortly after arriving home. But something about this felt different, especially considering the letter he had entrusted to her. As if to remind her, the envelope crinkled in one of her deep pockets.
She would have to read it later. The sight before her eyes right now stole all other thoughts from her.
The Hall of the Cornerstone was no longer the place of warmth and security it had once been. The light of the Cornerstone itself was dimmer, and as Minnie drew closer, she could see the evidence of darkness mingling with the light inside. No longer would it afford them the protection they needed. She could sense that much.
But her eyes were drawn to the elaborate coffin sitting in the middle of the room. Before she approached to see who was inside, she knew. She knew exactly who was in there. He was dead. And her heart broke.
With tears brimming her eyes, she stood beside the coffin, looking down at the face of her dearly beloved husband. Death was kind to him, for he looked so peaceful. It was a peacefulness he had not often had occasion to experience in life. So, in that regard, she supposed, it was a blessing.
She placed a gloved hand against the glass that covered his face. “Mickey... please don't leave me. I know you always do, but you always come back again. Please...”
Tears splashed against the glass, despite Minnie's attempts to contain her sobs. It became increasingly difficult to whisper the cries of her heart. “Who did this to you, dear? What happened to the Cornerstone?”
Her other hand retrieved the letter from her pocket. Brushing away her tears as best she could, she broke the seal and opened the envelope. Mickey's familiar handwriting jumped off the page, and she hugged the letter close to her chest for a moment. Then, she read.
My darling Minnie,
Things are starting to get really confusing. The safety of the worlds is at stake, but I can't figure out what to do. The one person who seems to know all the answers is the Champion, and he isn't exactly offering solutions on silver platters.
If you're reading this, that probably means I'm dead. I know how heart-broken you're probably feeling right now, but you've gotta stay strong like the queen I know you are. Dark days are comin'. I just know it.
Find Sora. He's the hope that we need.
I'll always love you, Minnie. Even death can't stop that.
Mickey
She carefully folded the letter and replaced it within the envelope. She would honor her husband's memory by doing exactly what he had said—staying strong. Their people needed her leadership now more than ever. She wiped away the tears still standing on the glass over Mickey's face.
“I won't let you down, my dear.”
After one last glance up at the semi-corrupted Cornerstone, she turned, the swishing of her dress a hollow echo in the hall, and left.
