The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a golden sheen over Radiant Garden. The view from the Bailey was spectacular, untainted for the moment by lurking Heartless. Sitting as comfortably as possible on one of the larger stones, Aerith stretched her hands to her knees and exhaled a sigh of contentment. The sound of children's laughter floated to her from the streets below, and the images of them scampering among the buildings brought a soft smile to her face. The Radiant Garden Restoration Committee members worked to rebuild this world for themselves, yes, but it was for the children and their future for which she personally worked the hardest. She did not want them to lose their very way of life the way she had at their age.
A faint breeze caressed her face, and she closed her eyes to savor it. She shifted one of her hands to rest beside her on the rock and felt the dust stir under the wind's breath. She, more than the rest of the RGRC, was sensitive to the pulse of the world. Often, she would retreat here to measure the world's health, to feel the rhythm of life in its veins. Some might even say that she communed with the very essence of nature, but she wouldn't say that of herself. She had read and heard tales of people in other worlds and times who built their lives around the worship of the natural world. But there was no worship on her part—only the unspoken conversations any two friends might have.
The wind died, and Aerith opened her eyes slowly to find Leon leaning against a wall, watching her. “Hey, Aerith. Merlin sent me to find you.” The question hidden in his words didn't need to be voiced.
She blinked once, as though surfacing from some faraway dream. “Oh. Hi, Leon.” She smiled fondly and slid her hands from her knees to rest on her thighs. “I was just enjoying the view and listening to the children.” It was a partial truth, at least.
Leon was not about to have wool pulled over his eyes. He looked at her for a moment more, then turned his head to gaze out at the sunset. “You're worried about him.”
Her smile faded a little, and she stood to her feet. Sighing softly, she moved closer to the edge of the Bailey. “I still have faith in him. We just...haven't heard from him in a while.” Pensively, she rubbed her left arm.
Leon looked at her again, his jaw set resolutely. “Cloud will be back. You don't think he would leave us forever without saying goodbye, do you?”
When she turned her face to meet Leon's eyes, she was smiling. “Of course not. The light that I know resides in his heart will lead him back here. It will lead him home.” She nodded, mostly for her own benefit, and then walked toward the Bailey's exit. “You said Merlin was looking for me, didn't you? Well, don't just stand there looking somber, Leon.” Laughing, she spun around to face him. “Yuffie's right, you know. If you don't want your face to start sprouting wrinkles in a few short years, you'd better smile more often.”
Chuckling, Leon pushed himself off the wall and moved to her side. “When we never need to worry about the Heartless, then I'll smile as much as Yuffie does.”
Aerith laughed bell-like again and walked with Leon down to Merlin's. But other thoughts still lingered in her head. While she was confident of her faith in Cloud's inherent light, she wasn't sure she could ever fully dispel the tiny bundle of worry nestled in the back of her mind.
