IRC IRC, Internet Relay Chat, is a way to talk to other members in real time in a chat room area. One can simply come in at any given time if they so choose. However, I realize that how to use it is not common knowledge. Here, I will lay out how to use it. There are various commands you will need to have memorized and things you should know about the server we are on.
The chat room, #sog, is located on the TelLaerad server. I chose this server because not only is it a Role-Playing server, but the staff are personable and the server is more stable than others. If you are not using the chat room link put on the forum and are using programs such as mIRC, Pidgin, or mibbit, here is information you will need to know:
Server: irc.tellaerad.net Port: 6667 Channel: #sog
The forum rules will be upheld in this chat room. If you have not already read the rules, please do so.
Now, when you first join, there are commands you need to know. I will cover Nicknames and IRC Powers. These commands will cover the basics of IRC. If you wish to know more advanced commands, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Nicknames
Firstly, you might want to change your nickname upon entering. For example, what if I enter the room and my name, Fate, is already in use. How do I change my nickname?
/nick YourNickNameHere
That will automatically change your name. However, it will not protect the name from other members using it when you are not logged in. Your name needs to be registered for that to happen. Use the following command to register your name:
/msg Nickserv register YourPasswordHere YourEmailHere
OR
/ns register YourPasswordHere YourEmailHere
You need to remember your password, for you will be using it every time you enter the channel after quitting. A password is used for identification to tell the server that this your name. I would also like to emphasize that passwords are case sensitive. To identify, use the following command:
/msg nickserv identify YourPasswordHere
OR
/ns identify YourPasswordHere
You may be asking this: Why do I need to register my name? For that, I will give you three reasons. For one, it will ensure that you are the only one in control of your name. Secondly, in order to register a channel, you need to have a registered name. Lastly, if you are set to a certain power level in the channel, it makes it so that when you identify, your power will be given to you automatically. It ensures that you will only be given that power if you have identified correctly.
IRC Powers
In IRC, there are different ranked power levels. In the channel, you may notice someone with a symbol next to their name. Below, I will explain what each symbol means and what each is capable of doing.
~ = QOP. They are the channel founder or channel owner. & = SOP. They are a Super Operator. @ = AOP. They are an Operator. % = HOP. They are a Half Operator. + = VOP. They are Voice.
What is the difference between these ranked powers?
QOP: They have complete power over the channel. They are able to set any mode to the channel or to any user within their channel. They have complete control over the powers of any other user within this channel as well. SOP: They have the same abilities as the QOP, but however cannot affect QOP users. For example, if a SOP user tried to ban a QOP user, it would have no effect. They are able to give ranks to other users that are below them, AOP, HOP, and VOP. AOP: Below the SOP users, AOP users are able to /kick or /kickban users from the channel as well as set HOP or VOP. HOP: Below AOP users, HOP users’ powers are limited to the following: muting the channel or kicking/kickbanning a user out of the channel. VOP: VOP users have no power whatsoever, but are able to speak when the channel is muted while regular users are not able to.
Now, how do you set different modes on other users?
QOP = +q SOP = +a AOP = +o HOP = +h VOP = +v
/mode #channelname mode Nickname
#Channelname = the name of the channel. The # is required or the command will not work. Modes = what I listed above: +q, +a, +o, +h, or +v. Nickname = The nickname of the user you wish to set the mode on. Remember, SOP users can only set modes +o and below, AOP +h and below, so on and so forth.
In order to make sure the power of the users, permanent, use the following command:
/msg chanserv Power #channelname add Nickname
Power = QOP/SOP/AOP/HOP/VOP
There are more advanced commands not listed here, but for basic use of IRC, they are not necessary. Again, if you wish to know more, do not hesitate to ask and we will gladly tell you.
