Temporary Chat Room

Since we don't currently have our C-Box running, I took the liberty of creating a small chat room for temporary use only. It's on an IRC network, Tellaerad to be exact, and I will explain if necessary.

The link to the chat room: Click Me! To change your nickname in the chatroom, you just need to type /nick INSERTNICKHERE and you're all set. If there are further questions on how to use it, let me know; I've been using IRC for at least a couple of years now.

My main purpose of doing this is so that way if something comes up quickly, whether it be a question or whatnot, you can contact a staff member quickly instead of having to do the PM process. Once we get the C-Box, I will probably delete this unless you guys actually like it.

Okay, so here's the scoop. I want to do this as a trial run using this chat. Tellaerad has a code so you can embed it on sites, so I did it. It's free and doesn't cost me a dime, nor did I have to create an account to get it (unlike C-Boxes, which you do have to create an account for and I find that to be a pain in the behind).

This trial run will last about two weeks. If you guys like it, we can keep it instead of getting the C-Box. If you don't, I'll get rid of it and we get the C-Box. I just wanted to show you what this actually looks like. The only problem that I'm having with this right now is that you have to rejoin when you go to a new page on the site. For now, if you're actually going to give this a shot, keep it as a separate tab.

So what exactly IS this thing that I embedded here you ask? It's called IRC, which stands for Internet Relay Chat. It is a live chat; basically a chatroom. There are big differences between it and the C-Box and I will explain them below.

• Unlike the C-Box, the IRC room can be moderated. Is someone saying something that they shouldn't? Is someone harassing another member on the site? You can simply ban them in an instant and make sure they never come back. The most you can do in a C-Box is delete the comments (which I'm not sure how to do, but that's just me XD).
  
• Unfortunately, you have to rejoin the IRC room every time you go to a new page. The C-Box stays stationary. Though, if you keep it as a separate tab, the problem is pretty much solved.
  
• The IRC room is live and real time. The C-Box you have to keep refreshing to see what people say.

That's about all I can think of at the moment. Here are a couple of basic commands though to help you out:

• To change your nick, you type /nick *Insertnicknamehere* (without the astericks).
  
• To register your name, which makes sure no one else uses your name and you can have power in the chatroom, you type /msg nickserv register *Insertpasswordhere* *InsertE-mailhere* (without the asterisks).
  
• After that, you'll want to keep using the same name again. The IRC cliant will ask you to identify yourself when you use that name now. You will then type /msg nickserv identify *Insertpasswordhere* (without the astericks). That will log you in again.

That's basically all you need to know for right now.

Okay, since two weeks will be tomorrow, I want to know what you guys think. Should we keep this thing or not? Mind you, I can change it to make it so it doesn't scroll down to the applet when you load a page. However, I need the coding to be done so I can do so (I plan to just put a link to the applet in an important links box, but I need the coding in to do so).

I mainly want to know if this is something you guys want to continue using or if you want to get rid of it. I think it could also be possible to have both the C-Box and this, but I want to know your opinions.

I like the IRC thing, except I don't use the box at the bottom but a separate link because I don't like having to keep logging in, switching tabs etc. And yes, please fix the jumping thing. @_@ I do like the IRC thing though, lets keep it.

Agreed, with the same concerns as Emi. Although, I switch between both the bottom IRC and the linked. So, if we can have it not go to the bottom, I'd love it. Please and thank you.

Like I said, all I need is the coding for the side-bars to be put in and I can get it so we just have the link to the chatroom instead. I tried messing with them earlier but it got me nowhere. We need a coder guys. @_@
