The sound of footsteps echoed around the otherwise silent Crystal Fissure. The crimson clad man that was walking through had chosen this place out of many in Radiant Garden to reside. It was familiar to him. The crystals growing in the small cavern reminded him of crystals in another cavern, far away and long ago.
He almost expected to turn and see her encased in the sparkling columns here as well. But everywhere he looked, there was no sign of any beautiful ladies encased in crystal coffins.
As he walked, his reflection stretched and distorted on the glassy rocks. That's all they were really. Rocks. People romanticized crystals for their beauty but Vincent knew that crystals were just rocks and there was nothing beautiful about them.
"I thought you'd gotten over all that stuff, Vince. But you still spend all your time in caves, brooding. What's wrong with you?"
Vincent had not answered Yuffie then, or since. He had no answer. In the wake of a crisis, it's easy to say 'I'm better now'. It's easy to say that your sins are forgiven when you are happy to be alive. But, the high wears off. The passion for new life fades. He had found happiness, forgiveness in a cave so that is where he tried again. He searched the crystals for a similar epiphany but found nothing.
These crystals were just rocks. What was he doing, trying to find wisdom in lumps of transparent minerals? He scoffed at his own naïveté. Things like forgiveness did not come so easily, you could not find happiness in your own reflection on a crystal. Perhaps that is why the last time it had faded.
"Here again?"
Yuffie's voice echoed through the cavern, drawing Vincent out of his thoughts. Vincent and turned and looked at the girl, but only sighed in response. Yuffie planted her hands on her hips.
"Come on, Vince. Everyone's waiting back at Merlin's house. Now that you're back in Radiant Garden with us, don't you think you should spend some time everyone?" she said, insistently.
"I... suppose," he said. Yes. It would be best to go back with Yuffie instead of sitting around in a damp cave. He couldn't find peace in these crystals but perhaps he could with his friends.
His friends. The notion was so foreign to him. He had friends now, how strange. But, that was the difference. That was how he could be happy now and not then. Now, he had friends.
He turned and walked past Yuffie, out into the sunlight. His tattered cape fluttered in the slight breeze. Yuffie ran to catch up with him, chattering incessantly about something or another. Vincent smirked and shook his head. Could he even find joy in Yuffie's babbling?
Yes, he thought. I can.
