I Nominate... Vexen could see behind Zexion's almost too composed face, that he was quickly trying to decide how he wanted to answer the barrage of questions being thrown at him. Trying to decide the best way to avoid causing any trouble between Number Five and himself. It was evident that he had chosen to fool his old friend, using him to stage a fake death for the Flame. The Academic still wasn't sure what his motivation behind this had been, but it must have been good, for him to have been willing to jeopardize perhaps the trust of his greatest ally...
The explanation was both unexpected, and somehow not all that surprising. Either way, he was not pleased to learn of the news. Though still absorbing the information, he probably would have immediately spoken up, did Number Six not gesture against it and attempt to justify his actions. However, his attempts at doing so did not sway Vexen's opinion of his actions. Everything he had to say, the Academic had already known. He had known that Zexion was suspicious of the Superior and he had known that he had supposedly found his proof. That did not justify the rashness of his actions, the apparent disregard of the possible consequences--
Though above all things, Number Four was primarily unhappy that he had not been involved in this plotting. He would have still objected to it, yes, most likely, but regardless... To say he felt betrayal might have been a stretch, seeing as there had never been complete trust between the Schemer and himself, but the scientist was still someone worth consulting on such a thing. Clearly someone must have taken a hammer to the head or something.
The Gambler's overly dramatic resignation and exit only served to give Vexen a smug satisfaction. A feeling "I told you so" towards Zexion, which he would have to express personally later. A bit childish? Maybe, but deserved. He had warned the Schemer of the likelihood of the Organization falling to pieces without Xemnas. And it looked like he had been completely right, no surprise. Honestly, he hoped the Nocturne would follow in Luxord's footsteps. Just like Number Eleven, he would not be much of a loss, and having two members immediately leave back to back left Vexen with even more justification for gloating.
Lexaeus was the first the speak, and despite being as unreadable as a rock, he must have been feeling a sense of betrayal. Vexen was willing to bet he was much more surprised than he was. At least he had heard of the suspicions, of the growing distrust for the Superior, and been given some indication of where the Schemer's thoughts may be headed... Besides, their relationship was a much more trusting one. Before this, that was...
"I couldn't agree more more." he agreed, nodding. "The one to take to replace Xemnas as Superior can hardly be one of his murderers..." The way he said the word made it very plain that he did not agree with what had been done. "Regardless of their intentions, we cannot have those who have proved themselves so deceptive and untrustworthy..." This was the point where Vexen would like to say "And so it is obvious that I ought to be the leader". Sadly, there was no denying the fact that such a blunt and untactful move would never work, even if he did have more within the Organization who were fond of him...
"Obviously it ought to be you, Lexaeus." It was a matter of weighting the choices, and there was no doubt that this was the best option. By no means was he Vexen, but he was more intelligent than most. And admittedly, he did score the highest of the Nobodies in terms of trustfulness... Unquestionably, he would be better than any of the three who had planned this coup. Besides, this gesture, which was about as nice as any than one could possibly expect from the Academic, could hopefully come back to help him. The Silent Hero was a smart pick to have on your side, and now that Zexion had lost him, it was a perfect time to go for him.

Demyx actually managed to really pay attention to what was said this time around. Apparently the Superior....was dead. X-Face, Axel, and the Pompous Jerk all brought him down together. It was quite shocking to be frank. He had no idea anything like that was happening, but that wasn't as surprising. It wasn't like he knew much of what the others did or planned anyway. Apparently it was done because Xemnas did not share their goals. However, that didn't mean the other three had other motives they weren't mentioning.
Zexion then mentioned something about the Champion but Demyx didn't think much of it, since Luxord soon spoke. He was a bit surprised to see the Gambler, calling it quits and giving up his cloak. That wasn't a good thing for Demyx, since he didn't really get along with any of the other members. He didn't pay much attention to what Lexeaus or Vexen was saying, trying to think of what his options were at this point.
It was then he decided to do what would probably be best. He followed Luxord's example and removed his cloak, revealing a simple blue long sleeve shirt and a pair of casual jeans. He grabbed some fingerless gloves out of his pockets and put those on. "I'm out dudes," he told them. Not that anybody would be surprised. While he did want to try and get his heart back, he couldn't imagine sticking around here any longer. It wasn't like any of them would care he was leaving anyway (ignoring the fact they couldn't care, no emotions and all). In fact they'd probably end up trying to get rid of him anyway. "I'm sure you're all relieved. Later," With that he disappeared into a corridor.

My lot has been cast for good or ill. -------- As expected, Lexaeus was prepared to finish the job he hadn't really finished in the first place. But he decided to demand an explanation from Zexion first. It was good enough to send him back to his seat. Thank Kingdom Hearts for that. Axel had his fill of Skysplitter back in Enchanted Dominion.
Much exposition by Zexion and then much exposition by Luxord was followed by Luxord stripping off his cloak and leaving. The Flame raised an eyebrow at that announcement. But the Gambler had made valid points, ones that Axel himself had mulled over.
Demyx wasn't far behind Luxord. Hell, they were dropping like flies. This was doing nothing to help decrease Axel's dubiousness about rejoining.
Vexen (Oh, yeah. He'd come in at some point or other) had made an odd suggestion. Lexaeus as the new Superior? No, that wouldn't do. He needed to say something and quickly.
Though, what to say? If this was the time to throw out nominations for the new Superior, it was time for Axel to choose. Back Zexion or back Saïx? Either way, there was something to gain and something to lose.
He had no doubts this time as to what the greater loss would be.
"Vexen, if you must know... only Zexion and I had most of a hand in orchestrating Xemnas's death. Saïx simply made himself available. And, in the long run, most of us here know that he, probably more than any of us, will do whatever it takes to get his heart back. Isn't that the kind of person you want to lead this Organization back to its true purpose? After all, none of this is about power. It's about regaining what we have lost."
He gave Saïx only a brief look before returning his gaze to the Academic. "Isn't that right?"

And this is what happens when you let men run things. -------- Alanix had been quiet throughout everything, merely taking it all in. This was mostly due to her complete confusion as to what exactly was happening. It seemed that the Superior, Xemnas was his name, of this Organization had been assassinated by the combined efforts of Zexion, Saïx, and a third Nobody she had never seen before. This one wasn't sitting in a chair for some reason, though he gave her a peculiar look when he first noticed her. She had never met him before. What had she done?
The eye contact was broken, and she had no time to dwell on its implications. Too much was happening too fast for her to keep up with. But she paid rapt attention. She would probably be repeating all of this later.
Two members, Luxord and another unfamiliar one, both left abruptly. So much for unity and loyalty to a single goal. "Organization XIII" was such a misnomer. She had half a mind to stand up and decry the methods these men were using, but she knew that wouldn't go favorably for her. No one here would take her very seriously, either, considering she was so new. Being out of the loop was not sitting well with her.
Still, she listened.
Both Vexen and the red-head--Axel, Zexion had called him--took their turns at nominating who they each thought should be the new leader. Vexen's choice was Lexaeus, and Axel's choice was Saïx. She considered both prospects with more of an impartial eye than anyone else here, probably.
The time was right for her to speak. Shifting a little in her chair, she said, "I respectfully agree... with Vexen."
As much as she hated to admit it, Vexen had a point. She saw Lexaeus as the better option, simply because he had taken no part in this coup. She knew next to nothing about Saïx other than what Axel had just said, and while having a strong drive was an admirable trait in a leader, it was not enough, in her opinion.
She went on to clarify. "All of you seem to respect him at least. And I sense that he is possibly the most trustworthy of anyone here. Since your former leader has been killed by three of your own, that suggests that he did not hold your complete trust. If all of you trust Lexaeus, then perhaps you would spend more time concentrating on regaining your hearts rather than squabbling among yourselves."
Honestly, this place was worse than her home. At least everyone besides Muriel got along with each other. Here, not only had Xemnas been disliked, but it seemed the rest of them all held some contempt for one or more of the others.

Could we start something interesting again? No? Bugger. The two resignations were certainly… somewhat unexpected to say the least. While he had figured the coup wouldn’t yield positive results immediately, Xigbar wasn’t actually expecting people to jump the ship so quickly. Much less two members who had barely any connection to The Superior. Well, the Freeshooter would at least miss his partner for lazing around the lounge. That would be missed more than the usual barrage of gambling metaphors. Now, it seemed the question was who exactly would assume command. Vexen, useful as always, couldn’t but open his darn mouth and suggest Lexeaus, a proposal that was soon after backed up by one of the new recruits. Xigbar was already not liking this new female recruit. Axel, predictably, proposed Saïx to take command, trying to justify the choice by saying he was barely even involved in the scheme. But, he had to agree, he seemed like a better pick than the Silent Hero. What to do? Back up the Schemer’s schemers, or support those out of the loop? ”It doesn’t really matter. If Lexeaus take charge, he’ll eventually start taking advice from Zexion again. Vexen’s mind works for experiments, not planning. And if Saïx is in charge, it’ll change nothing. This is such a charade…” he sighed, bored out of his mind with this meeting. The only point of entertainment came from Blockhead almost slipping Flamesilocks in two, and that wasn’t about to happen again any time soon. “My vote goes to whoever gets the job done,” he half-heartedly said. “And if someone tries to vote me, that person will be used as target practice.”

Leadership is useless when there's nothing to lead. Axel was supporting him? He supposed that was to be expected. It would have been surprising if he hadn't. Demyx left, too. While Saïx normally would have been content with the Nocturne leaving, he was disturbed by the deep, quickly forming cracks in the Organization. Two gone already, and the Champion looming ever closer. Did he think Lexaeus would make a good leader? Honestly, no. The only real problem would be his closeness to Zexion, but that was a large one. Although Number Six become more considerate and less ruthless somehow (a baffling change to say the least), he could still rule through the Hero if he gained some of his older spark back. He was still the Schemer, after all. However, Saïx knew what would happen if he took the position. The Organization, already damaged, would split. And he'd lose his chance of obtaining his heart. Lexaeus would do well enough. If Zexion became a problem, he could be dealt with. Saïx had made his decision. "I can not take the position. If Lexaeus is to take it I have no objection." He sat back. Axel had meant well, but such a move would be incredibly foolish.

The End of Kings? Luxord, with slight melodrama, made his exit. Demyx followed suit, only making Zexion wonder who was next. His eyes had been on Lexaeus for a moment or two, wondering what his reaction was going to be. Though, he couldn't help but look away shortly before the Nobody spoke. This was outright betrayal; not of the Organization, but between friends. He had severed that trust that Lexaeus had invested in him, broken it almost completely. There weren't going to be many ways he was going to be able to get that trust back either; this had severed it.
He crossed his arms while Lexaeus spoke, though otherwise did not move. None of them that committed the act should run this Organization, despite Zexion's attempts to show the validity of his motives. He flicked his eyes back to the Hero as he finished his statement, raising an eyebrow. He was thinking of something; there was no question about that. Quite honestly, the Schemer wanted to know what he had in the works.
He glanced around the room as various people offered nominations for people who should be the new Superior. Vexen suggested Lexaeus while Axel suggested Saïx. Zexion was still in agreement with what Lexaeus said; none who committed the act could be trusted to rule. Saïx knew how to do administrative duties and knew how to get things done, but even the Schemer wouldn't trust him there. As for Lexaeus, he had the Schemer's trust; that was unquestionable. However, he couldn't picture the Hero taking that duty. There was just something about Lexaeus that made Zexion not agree with that proposition.
Now, everyone had spoken and he needed to put in his opinion. Saïx declined to take the position. However, Zexion was shaking his head to this. The only option in his mind, before Lexaeus had even spoken before, had been Saïx. He did not think anyone else, except perhaps Xaldin if he were here, could lead. Could he do it himself? Perhaps, but he didn't want power. And, if he got it, he would be wondering who would try to usurp him. That was the problem with one person in power; there were more of them than there was the king.
"Perhaps nominating one single Nobody to power is a mistake," he asserted, then paused to look at Lexaeus for a second. What was he thinking of? "I would like to hear what you think about this though, Lexaeus. I cannot say I disagree with you being the most trustworthy of us all."

Lexaeus sat still, thinking, letting the words wash over him. Vexen's nomination has come as a surprise. After all, in the old order of things, Vexen had been a higher number, acting as if that made him outrank Lexaeus and Zexion. Perhaps it did. Perhaps that was a mistake.
They had already lost 3 members in a single stroke... a stroke delivered in part by the member he had trusted the most. If he could hurt, he would. He heard Zexion speaking to him, waiting for his own thoughts on the matter. Lexaeus ignored him and continued thinking silently for a moment.
"The Organization has had traitors under its roof before. Marluxia and Larxene. Roxas." His eyes opened to glance down. "Axel." It was an incomplete thought. "Marluxia and Larxene sought the power that Sora would give them in order to take over the Organization and rule. If what Zexion says is true..." Before, there would've been an if only for the purpose of others. Now... "...Then Xemnas also betrayed us using the power of his position to forestall this. And others just today used their position within the Organization to get to a position in which they could betray Xemnas."
"Our ranks must be abolished."

...I take it mulligans aren't allowed? At an earlier point, a Corridor of Darkness had opened up, out of which had stepped the current Eleven. Nyxar had stayed silent, but he had watched the events as they had proceeded. He had looked around the room, and, without further ado, sat himself upon his chair. He wasn't about to say anything, still, and instead surveyed who was here. It seemed they had added two new members while he hadn't been paying attention. He had been off doing his own thing.
Of course, the news that Xemnas was dead didn't faze him. He hadn't liked the leader--who scared the crap out of him--but he definitely did not like that Zexion seemed to be calling most of the shots, and he was working with Saïx and Axel. Axel also knew he was a traitor. Of course, since Axel and Zexion both knew...that meant his health was likely at risk here.
"So...can I get a mulligan?"

Madness! When Number Nine decided to follow the now former Ten's lead and quit (just as predicted) Vexen had to resist the urge to smile, which would not have been strictly proper under the circumstances. He did however glance over to Zexion, his eyes more than enough to display the perhaps out-of-place amused satisfaction he had. True, they were beginning to loose members left and right, and with the confrontation of the Champion growing near no less. But honestly, it's not like either of the recent deserters had been real assets. They were neither the brains nor the brawn of the Organization. They were liabilities, only getting in the way. Not that this fact would be saving the Schemer from later grief on the subject.
Vexen's attention was snapped down to Axel, whom he had almost forgotten was there. Was he really trying to pretend Saïx was even remotely innocent? "Oh, really?" he asked skeptically, clearly not buying this. Please. Besides, even were that true, which no doubt it wasn't... "Well I'm afraid past offenses cannot be ignored either." If they expected him to buy that claim that Saïx had been responsible for what happened in Castle Oblivion, then they were more foolish than he had thought. How Zexion seemed to be overlooking the matter of who was responsible for his own elimination was anyone's guess. One wouldn't expect a Schemer to be so easily trusting.
"You're right about one thing, of course. Saïx is willing to do whatever it takes to get his heart back, even more so than the rest of us. Unfortunately, I'm not so sure his unwaivering determination is such a good thing..." Evidently the Diviner had no hesitation in taking out anyone who might possibly stand between him and his goal. His desperation was dangerous. Vexen would have spelled this out more bluntly, but it was best not to turn this into a personal smear campaign against Number Seven.
Luckily, Saïx was not interested in the position. Or at least he was pretending this to be the truth at the moment. Xigbar was useless as usual, while the newest member, Alanix, actually came forward agreed with the Academic. Naturally any intelligent person would, he had simply not thought she fell into this category... Zexion was suggesting that they should not be nominating any one person, something that wasn't very helpful. What did he want to do, nominate two? Or three? That was just asking for a power struggle.
"Abolish our ranks...?" he asked incredulously, staring at Lexaeus as if he had just suggested the most ludicrous thing ever. Which as far as Vexen was concerned, he had. "Absurd! That would eliminating what little structure the Organization still has left." How were they supposed to function without any system of rank? They couldn't! No one being able to tell anyone else what to do would mean nothing would ever get done. "What are you suggesting, complete anarchy?" So it sounded. Lexaeus ought to just go with Vexen's generous nomination, and agree to become the new Superior.

"No. You are not looking close enough." Lexaeus told Vexen bluntly. "I am suggesting equal say. Not chaos. A group of people working towards a single goal under their own initiative. We would agree as a group on our course of action and then work with each other towards it." He uncrossed his hands and leaned forwards, taking his eyes off Vexen and towards the other members.
"With equal authority, each member would have the chance to prove themselves. There would be less opportunity for traitors to plan their acts. There would be no opportunity for tyranny by a single individual. Major decisions would be made for the good of the Organization BY the Organization, not merely by convincing one individual."
It was uncharacteristically wordy of him. It was also necessary to explain fully the idea he had had.
If he failed to convince the rest of the Organization of its necessity, then he might end up occupying the Superior's chair. Neither outcome was bad. But one was better than the other.

Trust is Key... Oh Goody. Abolish the ranks? Zexion's eyes widened to this idea, barely even noticing Nyxar come into the room. Suggesting that to the Organization, who for so long had been structured with its current ranks, was quite... out there. Though, at least from the Schemer's position, it might just be the only option. Putting one person as Superior, even if they were Lexaeus and were almost untouchable in regards to power, was dangerous and should not be done again. They had, or should have, learned their lesson with Xemnas and trusting one person to be on top. He didn't want to have to go through this again, even though he trusted Lexaeus. He did not trust him to run the Organization as well as it could be run.
"At this rate, no one person can run the Organization," he thought to himself. His arms stayed crossed as he kept thinking, listening as Vexen called the idea absurd --not a surprise of course-- and then Lexaeus explaining it in more detail. What he was suggesting was forming the Organization to be more a cooperative unit, to make decisions as a group instead of entrusting one singular Nobody to do so.
There would also be equal authority, which would take away power and give it at the same time. It would take away the power that Zexion had utilized to make the coup happen and take away what Vexen used to demand respect. However, it would give the lower members, what were considered the "Neophytes" more of a chance to speak and have power to make decisions. It wouldn't just be in the hands of the Superior or Zexion. It was an interesting idea to say the least.
"Much like a council," he said, "With every Nobody equal in power, decisions are not entrusted to one individual but to the group as a whole. It allows for more fairness than allowing for one person to make a decision that affects the entire Organization. Though, there are missions to consider. How would those operate? Perhaps..." He cut himself off, thinking. He didn't want to think aloud at the moment, not now. That would never change.
To continue though, missions would be different. It would not be one person handing out orders, which had worked efficiently up until now. Perhaps within this "council", it could still work like that... no, no it couldn't work like that. They would have to convene and decide together who does what mission. After that, they would have to trust that missions would be completed by said Nobody.
Trust... That would have to be a major component of this council. Zexion, who had kept his eyes on Lexaeus as he spoke, turned away and glanced elsewhere. Theoretically, it could work he supposed... If the Organization members could learn to trust one another, that would be beneficial. However, would it happen that soon? Doubtful.
"I second this idea," he concluded in a quieter tone, looking around the room, "It would be more beneficial for the Organization to do this." He then glanced down and away, averting any glances in his direction and saying nothing more.

I really don't care if I'm allowed a say or not. -------- Interesting. Saïx declined the position. Axel understood why he would do that. A broken Organization was no Organization at all, and while he would have no issues with Saïx in the leading spot, the others probably would to some extent. As cheesy as it sounded, working together seemed like their best chance at getting their hearts back.
Lexaeus then made an even more interesting proposal--the abolition of ranks and the establishment of a more council-oriented system. Axel couldn't say he hated the idea. It would certainly take away many of the reasons they all had to despise each other.
Speaking of despising other members, Vexen predictably objected to this idea. The Academic simply could not stand to have his one way of feeling superior taken away from him. Tough luck for him. If he didn't like it, Axel would be more than happy to show him the exit.
Or the other side of oblivion again.
Zexion threw his two cents in, which turned out to be less than his usual amount. The Flame's eyes lingered on the Schemer for a good while, even after he stopped speaking. Everything about Zexion's behavior was incredibly dissonant.
You're just not used to it, Zexion. Not only have you played a part in the murder of another member--Xemnas, no less--but you've also managed to burn the bridge to the only real ally you've ever had. And if you have my luck, the one you've killed will end up coming back anyway.
He resisted the urge to look at Vexen, instead continuing to eye the Schemer.
But you might be able to win that ally's trust back if you start acting a little more like me.
Fat chance of that. If Zexion suddenly adopted Axel's behavior, the World might explode. Besides, the connection between Axel and Saïx was different than the one between Zexion and Lexaeus. Not that Axel knew too much about it.
He wasn't even sure if he should be offering any input now. Technically, he was still not an Organization member. Whether or not he agreed would probably be brushed off, by Vexen if no one else.
Eh. Why the hell not?
Keeping his casual stance against the base of his chair, arms crossed over his chest, Axel decided to speak. "All other things considered, I'd say Lexaeus's suggestion is a good one."
There. He had supported it. That was all that was needed right now.

I might as well not say anything at this point. -------- Alanix had filled her quota for attempting helpful comments today. Anything else she said would probably be ignored or just barely recognized. No matter how much talk there was of making all of them equals with equal power and say, right now, there was simply too much chaos for her to expect them to listen to her.
So, she sat back in her chair, comfortably crossed her legs as best she could in this cloak (those boots, ugh, she would never get used to), and listened. Every detail could prove to be important, after all.

A Logical Compromise Vexen raised an eyebrow at the Silent Hero's explanation. A direct democracy? That was what he was suggesting? Zexion appeared pleased with the idea, no surprise considering the fact that it had practically been his idea. Axel also expressed support for the plan, not that the opinion of a traitor truly mattered. He wasn't even a member of Organization XIII anymore. "Well, it doesn't really matter what you say, now does it?" he snapped, not even bothering to look down while addressing him. "The future of the Organization is no concern to those who are not part of it."
As for everyone else, well they continued to remain silent. Perhaps they were still considering the radical proposal, unsure what stance they ought to take on the subject. Personally the Academic did not have such a problem with the suggested system in theory, there would simply be an undeniable issue in the application of it. If it were possible for everyone to see the most logical choice on all major matters, as Vexen did, and they could agree on it then that would be fine. Much better than having to accept the often questionable decisions of a clearly delusional Superior without objection.
But as it were, that was not the way things were ever going to work. "A lovely idea, no doubt. Regrettably, not an extremely practical one." There would always be too much disagreement for the group to be able to hope to function with such unity. "Flawed as it is, you have somehow managed to come up with a system potentially less functional than the one we already had! Quite a feat, I must admit..."
Still, the ability of self-government was evidently a thought that had captivated many of the others... There was a possibility that it could be implicated into a more stable structure, which might not be too terrible. "Without some sort of leader, we cannot hope to run efficiently. Now, does that mean we need a tyrannous dictator? Of course not. But a leader with limited power to oversee everything is still an unquestionable necessity." He paused, before adding hastily. "Don't worry, everyone could still have their say in things."
Ending with a rhetorical question was not even needed; it was clear that Vexen was right. Though if they would not head to reason, then there was nothing he could do about it.
